SSA Age Categories & Eligibility
The SSA uses "Medical-Vocational Guidelines" (Grid Rules) that consider age as a key factor. Generally, it becomes more favorable to qualify as you reach higher age categories:
- Under 50 (Younger Individual): You are generally expected to be able to adjust to other types of work. Qualifying usually requires meeting a specific medical listing or demonstrating an inability to perform even the simplest jobs.
- 50-54 (Closely Approaching Advanced Age): Rules become significantly more favorable. If your limitations restrict you to sedentary or light work, SSA acknowledges the increasing difficulty of transitioning to new occupations.
- 55-59 (Advanced Age): At this stage, the rules are even more lenient, especially for those with physical limitations or non-transferable skills.
- 60 and over (Closely Approaching Retirement Age): These are the most favorable rules. SSA recognizes the substantial challenges of learning new skills and entering new workplaces at this stage.
